Severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss

Hearing solution: Cochlear Implant (CI)

Indications:

  • Severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss
  • unilateral, bilateral
  • Hearing threshold 65 dB across all frequencies for air and bone conduction - see chart
  • Intact, functioning auditory nerve
  • Where appropriate, prior use of optimally fitted hearing aid
  • Minimal or no benefit from acoustic amplification
  • Realistic expectations
  • Willingness to do rehabilitation

Partial hearing loss/sloping high-frequency hearing loss

Hearing solution: Electro Acoustic Stimulation (EAS)

Indications:

  • Partial sensorineural hearing loss
  • Unilateral, bilateral
  • Sloping high-frequency hearing loss from approx. 1500 Hz (air conduction) - see chart
  • ≤60% monosyllables at 65dB SPL and optimal acoustic amplification
  • Air-bone gap not >15dB
  • Realistic expectations

Contraindications:

  • Progredient hearing loss
  • Malformation or blockage in the cochlea
  • Otosclerosis, ossification or similar contraindication in outer ear

  • Unilateral, bilateral
  • Stable air conduction thresholds: <65 dB at 500 Hz up to approx. 80 dB at 6 kHz - see chart
  • Normal middle ear function shown in impedance measurements and pure tone threshold audiometry
  • Speech audiometry corresponding to pure tone audiogram, minimum 50% at MCL with headphones in open-set word test
  • Better speech understanding possible with amplification
  • No retrocochlear or central hearing disorders
  • Realistic expectations
  • Minimum age: 5 years
